CRISPR and Blau syndrome

By the Cure Blau Syndrome Foundation · · Updated

CRISPR/Cas9 is technology for editing genomes by acting like a pair of scissors and cutting and altering strands of DNA. Blau syndrome is the result of a genetic mutation in the NOD2 gene. Because we can identify the specific genetic mutation that causes Blau syndrome, it is possible that this technology will help to lead to a cure.

There have been recent “successes” using CRISPR/Cas9 lauded in the media, such as this one, where dogs with muscular dystrophy had their disease reversed.

CRISPR/Cas9 has also been applied specifically to finding a cure for Blau syndrome. This study, recently conducted in Japan and published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, gives us hope that in the not too distant future we will see Blau syndrome eradicated.

Blau syndrome is an excellent candidate for CRISPR/Cas9 research specifically because the gene mutation is so easily identifiable. At curebs.com we intend to keep Blau syndrome in the spotlight of medical research teams who are working with CRISPR/Cas9 technology.
